Charles Berry (Charlie) McDowell Jr., 87, of Roanoke, Va., departed his studio on Wednesday, February 7, 2018, for a rendezvous with his late wife of 59 years, Julia Loomis McDowell; son, John Edmond McDowell; and his parents, Charles Berry and Mary Eloise Ratcliff McDowell.

Charlie was a United States veteran, was born on July 7, 1930, in Richmond, Va., and was an Art graduate from Richmond Professional Institute, now Virginia Commonwealth University (VCU). He was recognized for his distinguished career as Director of Creative Services with WSLS TV 10 from 1955 to 1969 where his art and film work were viewed and appreciated by many. As a prominent executive at Associated Advertising Agency, he and his wife, Julie, an illustrious artist, were instrumental in the premier opening of the Roanoke Civic Center, work on The Museum of Theater History, and members of the Advertising Federation of the Roanoke Valley. He was passionate and took pride in his work with the arts and with his family.

Survivors include his son, Charles James McDowell of Roanoke; grandchildren, Sean Patrick McDowell of Fort Worth, Texas, Ryan Daniel McDowell of Roanoke, John Edmond McDowell Jr. of Lynchburg, and Kendall Kathleen of Forest; and great-granddaughters, Teagan and Kayleigh McDowell of Fort Worth, Texas.

A heartfelt and distinct appreciation to his loving companion, Karol Beedle.

Funeral Services will be held at 2 p.m. on Thursday, February 15, 2018, at Our Lady of Perpetual Help Catholic Church in Salem, Va. Interment will follow in Evergreen Burial Park.
