At the age of 95, Zelma Winger Hampton, our beloved mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, and sister, passed from this earthly life, surrounded by her family, and joined her eternal companion on February 11, 2018. What a joyous reunion that must have been! Zelma was born on April 27, 1922 in Riverdale, Idaho to Loren A. and Hazel Mae Williams Winger. She was the 4th of 7 children. She went from a life with no electricity to the world we live in today.
Zelma graduated from Preston High School in 1940 and then attended Albion State Normal School, where she earned her Intermediate Teaching Diploma, graduating in 1942.
She taught middle school from 1943-1946 in Franklin and Preston Idaho. She loved her students and she thoroughly enjoyed teaching.
Zelma then received a call to serve an LDS mission to the Northwestern States Mission in June 1946. Upon returning home to Preston, she continued teaching during the school year and met her husband to be during her summer employment at the Del Monte Canning Factory. She married Kay Biggs Hampton on Sept. 20, 1950 in the Logan Utah LDS Temple.
They lived in Toole, UT for 3 years and then moved to Pocatello in 1953, where she lived for the rest of her life. They were the parents of five children—three daughters and two sons who cherish the memories they have of their parents.
She was a member of the Les Belles Lettres Literary Club for over 55 years and enjoyed reading and presenting book reviews for the club.
She taught kindergarten in her home for 3 years, and she loved the children she taught, many of whom remember those days.
Zelma was a life-long member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and served in many leadership positions, but her favorite callings were teaching either Gospel Doctrine or Relief Society. She was also called to serve at LDS Social Services for several years.
She received her realtors license and worked for Pocatello Realty.
After Kay retired they were called to serve a mission to the Pennsylvania Pittsburgh Mission. Most of their time was spent in Wheeling, West Virginia and they grew to love the people. Upon return from their mission, they accepted a call to serve in the Idaho Falls Temple. They served there faithfully together for 7 years and then she continued working there for an additional 6 years after Kay died, traveling to Idaho Falls by herself for those years.
Zelma loved spending time with her family and they created many memories while camping, skiing, and just being together in the outdoors. Zelma enjoyed traveling. She and Kay traveled to many countries including a trip to The Holy Land which was her favorite. They also loved traveling in their motor home, driving the Alcan Highway to Alaska and made many trips with her sisters, learning to play golf after they retired.
She is survived by her children, Suzanne (Dave) Gallafent, Deborah (Kenn) Spackman, Michael (Jolene) Hampton, Teri Lyn (Shane) Garritson, John (Camille) Hampton; 16 grandchildren; 34 great-grandchildren; a brother, Lorin Winger; and two sisters, Audra Mae Case and LoraJean Simpson. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; three sisters; and one great-grandchild, Beck Michael Hampton.
