Barbara Dell Sykes Schacht, 86, of Charlotte, NC, passed away on February 10, 2017. A memorial service will be held March 25th at 11:00 a.m. at McEwen Funeral Home Mint Hill location. Visitation will begin at 10:00 a.m. with family receiving friends before the service, also at McEwen.
Barbara was born at the family home in Franklin County, NC on September 9, 1930. She was the oldest child of the late Eugene "Buck" and Alma Sykes. She grew up in Castalia, NC and graduated from Edward Best High School. Barbara attended Kings Business College and worked as a secretary for several attorneys, churches, and schools. Barbara married the love of her life, Walter, in 1954. After living in Eden, NC, Barbara and Walter moved to Charlotte in 1962. She became very active in St. John's Episcopal Church and the children's schools, serving in many volunteer positions. Barbara was an avid reader her entire life, and while she did not think she was a good cook, the rest of us did! Her friendly, open personality gathered many close friends to her circle. For years Barbara was an administrative assistant at Oakhurst Elementary, where she was affectionately known as "Miss B". Even after her retirement former students would recognize her and greet her with a warm "Hey Miss B!" Barbara was a loving wife, mother, and grandmother and will be greatly missed.
Barbara was preceded in death by Walter. She is survived by her sons, both of Charlotte, Walter "Wally", (Jeanne), and James (Keri), and daughter Julie (Richard) of Columbus, GA along with seven grandchildren, Michael, Kathleen, and Elyse Sway and James, Reed, Leah, and Justin Schacht, a brother Larry, (Rita) of Richmond, VA, and a sister Nell (Dean) of Saginaw, MI and a host of beloved nieces and nephews, cousins, and dear friends.
Barbara's family wishes to extend their gratitude to the staff at Plantation Estates for their compassionate care. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Alzheimer's Association, www.alz.org/donate, or your favorite charity.
