Political leader. He graduated from Yale in 1828 and became an attorney in 1832. In addition to practicing law he also became active in the salt and lumber businesses. Between 1844 and 1882 he served 15 terms in the New York Assembly, and was Speaker in 1858, 1864 and 1879. Alvord was also New York's Lieutenant Governor from 1865 to 1867.
