He was a veteran of the US Air Force. He taught at the Williamstown Elementary School for 18 years and also worked at Green Mountain Race Track for 20 years. From 1987 to 2005 he was the assistant general manager of the Jacksonville Kennel Club in Jacksonville; FL.
Alan was a member of both the North Adams American Legion and the North Adams Elks Lodge.
