Elder Dan Adkins

Our dear father, Dan Adkins, was born June 6, 1902, and departed this life May 1, 1981. He was the late William Hayes and Martha (Justice) Adkins of Regina, Ky.
He married Bertha (Morris) Adkins on December 23, 1922. To this union ten children were born. Bertha and a daughter, Gherldene Stanaland, preceded him in death. Three brothers also preceded in death.
He is survived by his wife, Iva B. Adkins; five daughters: Emogene Browning, Racine Daniels, Karoldean Smith of Louisville, Ky.; Arlenus Dillender, Sugar Land, Texas, and Jacqueline Pearson of Houston, Texas; four sons, Edgar Ray, Bill Joe and Harold L. Adkins of Louisville, and Alvis B. Adkins of Redondo Beach, Calif.; three sisters: Mercy Thacker, Carrie Coleman and Mary Ann Coleman, Millard, Ky. He also had 13 grandchildren, six great grandchildren and a host of friends and relatives and brothers and sisters in the church.
Dad’s first job was teaching school. During the 1920’s, he moved to Pond Creek and worked on the railroad. Later he was employed by Fordson Coal Co., which became Eastern Cal Corp. He worked as an electrician for Eastern and retired 14 years ago. He was a member of the Stone Lodge 390, F & AM, and a Kentucky Colonel.
Dad united with the Primitive Baptist Church April 20, 1941. He had two grandfathers that were elders. Dad served as an elder for almost 40 years. Some excerpts from his written thoughts are: “God is holy, pure, without inquity and is not connected to wickedness and the sins of man and devil. Holy and reverend is His name. God Almighty, from everlasting to everlasting truth, God can only be worshipped in spirit and truth. Brethren and Sisters, that is what I believe to be the truth. I have enjoyed some fruitful seasons, while on the other hand, I suffered many heartaches and pains. Brethren, think of the difference in salvation and obedience. In obeying, we are promised a blessing and in disobeying, God’s wrath is poured out upon us. May God bless us to meet in peace and love and continue the same way.”
We believe our loss is his eternal gain.
