Florence Joyce Johnson Smith, 74, died September 14, 1993 in Orem. She was born December 2, 1918 in Mesa, Arizona to Jesse Leo and Josephine Wing Johnson. She married Daniel Nelson Smith Jr. September 19, 1941 in the Salt Lake Temple. He died September 19, 1971.
Joyce spent her youth in Southern California and attended Riverside Jr. College. She filled a mission (Spanish-American) on the Texas border where she met her husband. After marriage Dan entered the Army and served with General Patton's troops in Europe. They were reunited after his release from the service.
Joyce's family was her life and her church was her favorite activity. She served on many occasions in Primary and spent much of her life as Relief Society president. Her Sunday School classes were very enjoyable and she gained a reputation as a scriptorian. She served several stake missions in California and Texas.
Her home was open to young people who needed help and many besides her own children call her mother. Joyce was widowed in 1971 and worked as a cook for Alpine School District until illness forced her retirement in 1984.
Joyce is survived by two sons and four daughters: Daniel Nelson Smith III, Kearns, Utah; Florence Joyce Cook, Chino Hills, California; David Lauren Smith, Gooding, Idaho; Julie Ilene Bott, Big Lake, Alaska; Joanne Kathleen Gatherum and Janalyn Kay Smith, both of Orem, Utah; 16 grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; two brother and one sister: Jesse Leo Johnson, Provo; David Eugene Johnson, Washougal, Washington; and Beverly Jeanne Sharp, Orem. She was preceded in death by one sister and one brother; Valerie Louise Paige and Donald Dean Johnson.
Funeral services were held September 16 at Provo. Interment Orem City Cemetery.
