Steven Francis Clayton was born in Sangamon County, Illinois on August 17, 1857. He departed this life April 3, 1930, aged 72 years, 7 months and 17 days. He was converted at an early age and lived a devoted Christian life. He was married to L.J. Stevens in the year 1876. She preceded him in death 34 years ago. To this union two children were born. Mrs. Susie Workman of Chadwick survives but the other daughter, Mrs. Sadie Darlin, departed this life in August 1907. Stephen's second marriage occurred in 1898 to Mollie Gibson. She preceded him in death four years ago. Besides the one daughter he is survived by four grandchildren, four great grandchildren, five brothers and two sisters and 11 step children besides a host of friends and other relatives. He was a kind and loving husband and father. The funeral services were held Sunday, April 6, at 1 p.m. at the Sparta Baptist Church with burial in the Chadwick Cemetery under the direction of B.C. Klepper of Ozark.
