Wife of Clayton Alexander

Florence F. Alexander
1929 - 2016
BENTON - Florence F. Alexander, 86, passed away peacefully with her family by her side at Lakewood Continuing Care Center in Waterville on May 22, 2016.
Florence was born in Fairfield Center on Oct. 20, 1929, the daughter of Perlie and Rosie (Haley) Flye. In 1948 she graduated from Besse High School in Albion. Florence married Clayton Alexander on June 12, 1948. Together they started their own dairy farm which they ran into the early 1960s while raising their three daughters.
Florence later worked for Avian Farms Hatchery in Winslow for many years. She then began working as a bus aide for MSAD #49, a job she loved and from which she retired in February of this year after 15 years of service. Florence was a longtime member of the Benton Falls Congregational Church and the Benton Grange. She was the first woman Master and recently received a certificate for 65 years of Grange membership.
Florence's life centered around her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She attended their school and sporting events and supported them in all of their activities. She enjoyed her flower gardens and took pride in keeping her home well-maintained. She enjoyed going on day trips with family and friends, and working on crossword and jigsaw puzzles. Florence often went with her friend Janice to meet others for breakfast or to church suppers.
Florence went on many trips, including a four-generation trip to Florida in November of 2015, where she rode in a helicopter for the first time.
Florence was a talented cook well-known for her delicious baked goods. She was often found in her kitchen with an apron on, baking pies, donuts, cream puffs and other specialties from scratch using recipes she seldom had to refer to. Her popcorn balls were a Halloween tradition that both adults and children stopped by to get, and her turkey pies were a holiday tradition.
Florence was predeceased by her parents, Perlie and Rosie Flye; her husband Clayton Alexander; her siblings Charlotte Beesley, Ellsworth Flye, Doris Fenlason, Pauline Pottle, Phyllis Penny, Arlene Good, Robert Flye and Virginia Giroux; along with her beloved dog Nicki.
Florence is survived by her daughters: Patricia Montgomery and her husband Shawn of ChiIliwack, British Columbia, Jan Alexander and her companion Stu Benner of Benton, and Deanna Alexander of Corinth; her grandchildren Jennipher Smith and her husband Ken of Benton, Timothy Wright and his wife Stacy of Winslow, Dustin Wright and his wife Erica of Benton, Chad Foster and his wife Stacie of New Sharon, Tiffany Stevens and her husband Scott of New Sharon, and Megan Cleminson and her husband David of Abbotsford, British Columbia; great-grandchildren Alyssa and Abby Wright, Rece Smith, Cameron, Dylan and Derrick Smith, Memphis Wright, Haisen Gage and Kendall Foster, Ali Stevens, and Harmony and Zion Cleminson. She also is survived by three sisters-in-law: Alice Alexander, June Flye and Helen Alexander, and nephew Jeff Flye, who was like a son to her; as well as many nieces, nephews and special friends.
The family would like to thank the nursing staff at Inland Hospital, and at Lakewood Continuing Care Center's skilled and long-term care units, including her great-granddaughter Alyssa, who assisted in her care, along with Beacon Hospice, for their compassionate care. With special thanks to nurses Mary Carey (at Lakewood) and her son Jeremy Carey (at Inland Hospital) for their extra-special care and attention. Thank you to her niece Dottie Pooler for her daily morning check-ins and updates. Thank you to Isaac Stone at Beacon Hospice who provided comfort and support during a very overwhelming and difficult time.
At Florence's request, there will be no funeral service. A Celebration of Life will be held on Friday, June 3, 2016, from 5-8 p.m. at the Winslow VFW. Arrangements are by Aable Cremation Service LLC.
