When he was young he helped the old. When he was old he helped the young

James (Jim) Frederick Lewis age 77, died at his winter home in Hoonah AK, surrounded by his faithful dog Recon, his kids, and grand kids.

He is survived by his daughter Teresa Mallinger (Matt) and grandsons, Hunter, Brady, and Luke Mallinger; son Travis (Janice); grandchildren Teresa and Dietrich Lewis; brothers Mike and Pat Lewis; nephew Cris (Deana); nieces Rachel (Gus) and Joleen Lewis; and many other relatives and friends, and numerous cousins.

Jim moved to Elfin Cove in 1963 originally to run a fish buying scow, but soon became a commercial fisherman. He fished over 50 years and had the local hardware store while he operated the Elfin Cove light plant for over 30 years.

"Uncle Jim", as he was known to the Southeast fishing fleets, was noted for his unique laughter, his big smile, and a helping hand to friends and strangers a like. He is remembered as the go to guy for all who traveled through Elfin Cove. He will be sorely missed by both the communities of Elfin Cove and Hoonah.

There will be a memorial service this summer in Elfin Cove. As per his wishes a portion of his Ashes will be spread in the inner harbor in the Viking style. The other portion will be returned to his childhood ranch in Eureka Kansas.

The family wishes to give special thanks to, Dr. URATA and Dr. THOMPSON, who always treated him with kindness, respect and dignity! Likewise to the Hoonah Search Clinic and EMT Services who always went beyond the call for him.

Celebration of Life services on June 29th at 2pm in Elfin Cove.

With his kind nature, infectious laugh and and a work ethic that would shame an Amish farmer, he was always the first one to lend a hand. Though, like us all, he had his faults - they were far outweighed by his qualities. He was loved by ladies, respected by men and feared by fish. Although born in Kansas, he made his life on the sea as a commercial fisherman in S.E. Alaska. So I will close by saying, fair winds and following sees uncle Jim. We love you and you will be missed. ~ Todd Lewis (nephew)
