Stanford Gayle Cain was born in Hennessey, Oklahoma, on February 3, 1925. He was the third of six children born at the family farm to Samuel Glenn (Jack) Cain and Nora O'Hern Cain. Gayle attended elementary school in a one room schoolhouse named Surprise, and then graduated Hennessey High School in 1942.
His studies at Oklahoma State University were interrupted after one year by World War II in 1943. He trained in the Army Air Force as a radio operator mechanic gunner on a B-24 bomber. From October 1944 to VE Day, he flew twenty-six missions over Germany and occupied Europe. After being discharged in November 1945, he returned to Oklahoma State University from which he received both his Bachelor's and Master's Degrees in Electrical Engineering.
Gayle married his college sweetheart, Wanda Jean States in December of 1948. In his own words, he always said it was the best thing that ever happened to him. His first job was in Milwaukee, where his two daughters, Deborah Gayle and Vickie Lynn were born. In December of 1952, Gayle relocated the family to Albuquerque to begin his thirty-five year career with Sandia Corporation. In October of 1955, Sandia transferred him to Livermore, California to start as part of the original team for this new location. Until his retirement, Gayle worked for Sandia conducting research and development of nuclear weapons under the Atomic Energy Commission.
Gayle wishes to be remembered as a man who loved his country and his family; a devoted husband and loving grandparent. Gayle is survived by daughters, Deborah Millaway (James) and Vickie Nervino (David); grandchildren, Blake Nervino (Allison), Jessica Nervino, Jack Millaway (Ellye); brothers-in-law, Dene States (Wanda) and Joe States (Maydona); sisters-in-law, Linda Olmstead and Melva Drury (Bill); and more loving nieces and nephews in Oklahoma than can be named.
He is preceded in death by his father, Jack Cain, mother, Nora Cain, sister, Kathleen Hobs, and brothers, A.B. Cain, Vern Cain, and Willey Cain. Gayle's loving wife, Wanda Jean States passed away in October 2015, after nearly sixty-seven years of marriage. Gayle will rejoin Wanda when he is interred at the San Joaquin Valley National Cemetery on February 13, 2018.
