Leo lived most all of his life in Iowa. He married Anna M. Tabert on 7 April 1968; however, they were later divorced. In 1981, he married Jeanne Marie Newton in Missouri; they divorced in 2007 in Iowa. At the time of his death, he was married to Connie Parcel. He had three brothers and two sisters, all of whom lived to adulthood.
