Gail Marie Matthews (81) passed to her heavenly home on Monday January 22, 2018.
She is the former Gail Marie Fisher, youngest child of six children of Louis and Augusta Fisher from Evansville, Indiana.
Gail's entire childhood was spent in Evansville, Indiana where she graduated from Reitz High School in 1955 and graduated from Evansville College earning a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Education in 1959.
She met the love of her life and husband of 58 years, Larry Anthony Matthews (Tony) while singing in the Reitz High School choir together.
Gail and Tony spent a lifetime of singing in church and community choirs together while moving throughout the country and the world as Tony served as a Chaplain in the United States Air Force. Together they spent 30 years serving as Tony achieved the rank of Colonel with Gail at his side serving her role as the officer's wife and the minister's wife.
Gail taught Elementary school in the Atlanta school system while Tony was in seminary and in Department of Defense schools at various assignments around the world. But most of her "career" was spent fully supporting those she loved through her amazing organizational skills and stamina to orchestrate their many many military moves, raising three children all while volunteering and serving in leadership roles on the military bases and in the local communities. Gail was a consummate caregiver and always there to lend a helping hand. She served as PTA President, President of the Protestant Women of the Chapel, President of the Officer's Wives, sat on many church boards, was a Sunday school teacher and superintendent and so much more. Many have commented that she was the most selfless person they know. She was often referred to as a "saint" or an "angel". She was loved by so many and will be so sorely missed.
After her husband Tony retired from the US Air Force, they moved to Citrus Springs Florida where they built a home and lived in for 19 years. In 2013 they made the decision to reside in two places to be closer to their children, spending most of their winters in Fairhope Alabama and Cornelius North Carolina mostly in the summers. After spending 8 months in North Carolina this past year they recently returned to Alabama when Gail became ill.
Gail lived an adventurous life with her family, residing in Clark Air Force Base, Philippines, Izmir Turkey, and Milddenhall Air Force Base, England. She also lived throughout the US with military assignments in Michigan, Nebraska, Florida, Virginia and Texas. Some of her favorite memories were from her numerous family vacation trips, throughout the country and world. She and Tony took each of their grandchildren, upon turning 10 years old, individually on a trip which included venues like Greece, Turkey, Egypt, Hawaii, Poland, Alaska, Russia, Great Britain, Hungary and Czech Republic.
Gail and Tony also visited Australia, Thailand, Central America,China, Germany, Japan, Israel, and all over Europe. They also traveled across the US from Key West to Maine, up and down the California west coast, and throughout the western states. Her most recent family trips were just this past year when she spent 4 days in Las Vegas celebrating her 80th birthday and 10 days on a Nova Scotia cruise just this past October, enjoying a broadway play (Hello Dolly) in New York City before the cruise departure. This past year she also celebrated two of her grandchildren's weddings dancing with her Tony and her kids late into the night.
Her love ones all agree she lived a life well lived and was a good and faithful servant.
She is survived by her family who will miss her immensely, her husband Larry Anthony (Tony) Matthews, her three children Teresa Ann Williams (Scott) of Abingdon Virginia. Dr. Daniel Eugene Matthews (Cathy) of Fairhope, Alabama and Dr. Andrew Lee Matthews (Renae) of Cornelius, North Carolina and her 7 amazing grandchildren who she loved so dearly, Dr. Zachary Scott Williams (29), Samantha Ann Williams (26), Megan Nicole Matthews (24), Jordan Nicole Smith (23) (Cason),Taylor Alyse Matthews (21), Seth Anthony Matthews (20) and Blake Andrew Matthews (20).
Services celebrating her life will be held on Saturday January 27 with visitation at 2pm EST and service at 3 pm EST at the First United Methodist Church Dunnellon, Florida. Gail and Tony were active members for 19 years and they enjoyed the constant love and support of their wonderful church family. Pastor Eddie Fulford will lead the worship celebration.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Mission's Ministry Fund at First United Methodist Church in Dunnellon in memory of Gail Marie Matthews.
