Mabel Valonta Ellison, 95, passed away on Jan. 22, 2018, at Homestead of El Dorado surrounded by her family.
Family will gather with friends for visitation from 5 to 7 p.m. on Thursday, Jan. 25, at Heritage Funeral Home, 206 E. Central, El Dorado. Funeral service will be at 11 a.m. on Friday, Jan. 26, at Towanda United Methodist Church, Towanda, with Pastor John Martyn officiating. Interment will be in the Towanda Cemetery, Towanda.
Mabel was born on Feb. 22, 1922 in Niles, Kan., to Albert and Mary “Werner” Watkins. She graduated from Minneapolis High School and worked for Boeing during WWII as a bookkeeper. She married James Cleo Ellison on June 12, 1946 and later worked as a bookkeeper for companies such as Cargill, Whitewater Mill and various other companies. In 1958 Mabel and Jim bought a 400 acre ranch near Cassoday, where they raised cattle, hogs, chickens, and crops. Mabel’s main job was tending to the hogs; she helped deliver thousands of piglets over the years. In 1966 they were blessed with their first son James Rodney Ellison and two years later in 1968, a second son Randall Scott Ellison. In 1973 Mabel and Jim decided it was time to sell the Ranch and the family then moved to Towanda. Mabel always enjoyed being around family and friends and playing games such as pitch, pinochle, bridge, hot dice and outdoor games like crochet.
Mabel was preceded in death by her parents and all 7 siblings, Clarence, Barbara, Margaret, Merlin, Raymond, Albert Jr., Arlene and her husband of 46 years Jim.
She is survived by: her sons, Rodney Ellison of El Dorado, Randy Ellison (Kim) of Towanda; four grandchildren, Rylee Ellison of Kansas City, Mo., Paige Ellison of Wichita, Alexis Ellison of Wichita,and Chase Ellison of El Dorado; numerous nieces, nephews, other family and friends.
