Selfless and beautiful, Susan Arlene Smith, 64, went to be in her heavenly home on Thursday, January 25, 2018. Born in Columbia, SC and a Lexington county resident all her life, Susan was the daughter of the late Gibson and Eva Lawson. She was also predeceased by a brother, Larry E. Lawson.

Susan was a member of Trinity Baptist Church for thirty years where she was an active member of the Trinity Celebration Choir, Trinity soloist and Bible study teacher. She was also privileged to serve on the Health and Wellness Team since 2012. A believer in that we are here to serve and not be served, Susan began her nursing career in May of 1976. A graduate of the University of South Carolina College of Nursing and Graduate School, she worked as a bedside nurse moving up to the opportunity to teach nursing students for 18 years, three years at USC and 15 years at Midlands Technical College where she was awarded Faculty Member of the Year and Teacher of the Year. Additionally during her nursing career, Susan worked at Baptist Medical Center and Lexington Medical Center and also served at the Department of Health and Environmental Control as an immunization consultant. In 2008, Susan became state director for Immunization, winning the SC Palmetto Gold Award. Through the years from 2010 to 2014, Susan worked in the Bureau of Children Services in the State School Nurse Program, Postpartum Newborn Home Visit Program and Lead Screening Program. Resigning from DHEC in 2014, Susan returned to the hospital setting at Palmetto Health Centers for Nursing Excellence with Mother/Baby. Susan's love for the Lord, family, friends and nursing as well as her wonderful kindness were unparalleled.

Surviving are her husband and soul mate, John E. Smith, married almost 41 years, and their beloved daughter, Nancy Michelle Smith.

A celebration service, honoring the life of Susan, will be officiated by senior pastor Eddie Coakley, assistant pastors Micah Merchant and Wes McKinney at 3 PM on Monday, January 29, 2018, at Trinity Baptist Church, Charleston Highway, Cayce, SC. Visitation will be held at 2 PM, one hour before the celebration service. There will be a private graveside service for the family. Memorials may be made to Trinity Baptist Church Music Ministry or Palmetto Health Children's Hospital. The family would like to thank the Palmetto Health nurses in the Murray Unit at the Heart Hospital and the Palliative Center at Baptist Medical Center. Barr-Price Funeral Home assisted the family with arrangements.
