Ellen Maud Dobe was born in Ipswich to Henry 'Harry' Dobe and Sophia Dobe, nee Butterfield. Ellen married John James Clarris in Toowoomba on 03/09/1914 and had five children, two of whom died in infancy. Moved around Queensland with Johnny's work as a carpenter. He didn't serve in WWI but lied about his age, saying he was 35 when he was 48, and enlisted in 1940. Both Johnny and their two sons, Arthur and Norman, served overseas during WWII. She was known to her grandchildren as both loving and kind, as well as stern and disapproving. Having lost two children and lived through two world wars and a worldwide depression, she was a woman of her times.
