Mary L. Morris, 85, of Harbor Springs, passed away on July 11, 2020 surrounded by family at her home of many years Villa at the Bay.

Mary was born in Petoskey on March 14, 1935 the daughter of the late Naomi and Fred Lashmit. Three sisters, whom she loved dearly, passed before her, Betty Foster, Carrie Cooke, and Hope Parrish. Robert Morris, her husband of 56 years, passed before her in 2011. Mary is survived by her daughter, Diane Morris Kabat (Tim), three sons, Mike Morris (Sarah), Patrick Morris (Annie), Rob Morris (Nicki), six grandchildren, two great grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews.

The Lashmit family first lived on a rural farm in Clarion. Mary often spoke of the small home, modest barn, the family cow and her chickens, and the drafty outhouse. She told stories of country life pumping water, pulling weeds, washing clothes in tubs and the daily baking of bread in the wood fired cook stove. Life was simple and her childhood there was wonderful.

When the girls all reached school age, the family bought a small home on Rush Street in Petoskey. Her fondest memories were her dog named Penny, walking down the hill to school, ice skating at the Winter Sports Park and working at Jesperson’s restaurant as a dish washer and waitress.

While in high school, Mary met her future husband, Bob and they became sweethearts. After graduation they married in 1955 and moved into their new home on Third Street in Harbor Springs. They raised their family here surrounded by wonderful neighbors. One could not have asked for a more perfect place to live. The family home remains as a reminder of those times long ago.

Mary’s children and grandchildren were spoiled in a good way and showered with her love, time and attention. She was known for her beautiful flower gardens, the pride she took in caring for her home, and the wonderful pies and cookies she baked. She loved sewing clothing for her children and Christmas stockings which she would donate to community charities. After her children were grown, Mary enjoyed working for Gurney’s Bottle Shop and the Voyager Gift Shop.

Towards the end of her life, Mary was fortunate to find expert care givers at Villa at the Bay. The staff welcomed and treated her like a family member. Her children express their profound gratitude to everyone of these dedicated nurses, nursing aides, therapists, social workers, kitchen staff, receptionists, housekeepers, laundry, activities staff, and office personnel. Their love, laughter and care made her days happier and gave her great comfort.

A memorial service will take place on a later date at Greenwood Cemetery.
