Corporal James A. Costello served during the Civil War in Company C, 69th Pennsylvania Infantry. He was wounded in action at Glendale, VA on 30 Jun 1862. He was also wounded in action at the Battle of Gettysburg during the repulse of Pickett's Charge on July 3rd, 1863. He was at the wall in front of the copse of trees in the center of the Union line.

James A. Costello also served as a Private in Company K, 24th Pennsylvania Infantry, a three month regiment, in early 1861.
