Her mother was the daughter of John and Sarah (Casselberry) Ault.
Hattie was a photographer and had moved to New York in 1892 and resided with her first cousin, Harriet (Ault) and her husband James Oliver Baird.
On March 26, 1893, she married Eugene Gottlieb Engels in Kings, New York.
On August 4, 1894, she gave birth to Basil Baird Engels in Brooklyn, Kings, New York. Hattie clearly honored the family bond between herself and Harriet (Ault) and James Oliver Baird by bestowing her only child with the middle name of "Baird".
Between 1900-1901 the family moved to Pasadena, Los Angeles, California, where Hattie would reside for the remainder of her life.
