Educator, state senator. Bernice Lorene "Buddy" Shaw, who commonly used his initials BL in place of his given family names, was a longtime teacher and past principal of Shreveport's C.E. Byrd high school prior to entering politics.

Born September 6, 1933, in Jamestown in Bienville Parish and reared in Minden in Webster Parish, Republican Shaw successfully ran to procure the District 37 seat vacated by the term-limited Senator Max T. Malone of Shreveport.

An Army veteran, he received his bachelor's and master's degrees from Northwestern State University in Natchitoches in 1955 and 1960, respectively. He later received the Ed.D. degree from Louisiana State University in Baton Rouge.

After a career as a classroom teacher and principal of Byrd, he served as the supervisor of Caddo Parish public schools and later served as an elected member of the Caddo Parish School Board. In 2000 he was inducted into the Byrd High School Hall of Fame. He also was inducted into the NSU Hall of Distinguished Educators.
