Friends and family of John A. Buechle of McMinnville will gather from 1:30 to 4 p.m. Friday, March 2, in the Fireplace Room of Hillside's assisted living facility for a memorial service. The Rev. Harold Otterlei will officiate.
Private family interment will be conducted in Evergreen Memorial Park in McMinnville under the direction of Macy & Son Funeral Directors. The mortuary will be open for visitation from 4 to 6 p.m. Thursday, March 1.
Mr. Buechle died Monday, Feb. 26, 2007, in the Hillside Skilled Nursing Center. He was 89.
Born Nov. 6, 1917, in Garrison, N.D., he was the son of John and Marianna (Keller) Buechle. He attended Garrison Grade School before graduating from Martin Grade School in Martin, N.D.
As a young man, he farmed and traveled.
He married Hilda Pfeifer on Jan. 1, 1944, in Jamestown, N.D. The Buechles farmed east of Martin until 1956, when they moved to McMinnville.
In Oregon, he worked in both home and mobile home construction, the latter at the Rex Mobile Home Factory in McMinnville. He was a master carpenter.
Mr. Buechle loved spending time in his workshop and particularly enjoyed experimenting with different types of wood on his lathe. His grandchildren looked forward to visiting his shop, knowing he would have woodworking projects to share.
He also did cabinetry and other carpentry work for the Hillside Retirement Center. He enjoyed going for walks, listening for train whistles and finding interesting rocks and stones, and was an active member of the Nazarene Church on the Hill.
Family members called him a loving, caring man with a witty sense of humor. "He always had a funny story or joke to share," they said.
Survivors include a son, John C. "Charlie" of Milwaukie; a daughter, Bonita G. "Bonnie" Lopez of Eagle River, Alaska; a sister, Lydia Hirning of Missoula, Mont.; four grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his wife in 2004 and by three sisters.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Legacy Health Systems Hospice, care of Macy & Son Funeral Directors, 135 N.E. Evans St., McMinnville, OR 97128.
