Jesse William Mills, long active in Portland fraternal circles, died suddenly at his home, 3067 N. E. Pacific street, Thursday. He came to Portland from Sparta, Ontario, Canada, in 1888. After teaching in the schools here for eight years, he served in the United States customs office for 30 years, retiring 11 years ago.
Mr. Mills was supreme treasurer of the United Artisans Life Insurance company for 25 years; a 50-year member of the Masonic lodge, a past patron of Martha Washington chapter, O. E. S. No. 14; past watchman of Shepherds of the White Shrine, Order of Jerusalem; past grand patron, Order of Amaranth; member of Multnomah camp, W. O. W., No. 77; a member of the Order of Maccabees and a deacon of White Temple Baptist church for eight years.
He is survived by the widow, Lulu, and a daughter, Mrs. Carl Sandquist, Portland, and a brother, Wilson H. Mills of Sparta, Ontario, Canada.
Funeral services will be held Monday at 2:30 P. M. in the Holman & Lutz mortuary. Dr. Ralph Walker of First Baptist church will officiate, and interment will follow at Abbey View [sic] cemetery.
