Mr. Combs was born January 23, 1939 in Heard County to the late Willie Frank Combs and Hettie Lois Toney McClain. He served his country in the US Navy.
He was a Baptist by faith and a preacher. He loved Prospect Church, where he was a member, and listening to gospel music.

He was devoted to his family, who were the center of his life. He was especially proud of his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He had a special nickname for every one of them. His favorite times were spent gathered with his family for a meal together.

He loved everything about football (except the referees). He was an avid fan of the Georgia Bulldogs and the Atlanta Falcons. He had the opportunity to attend two recent high profile games. He went to the 2017 NFC Championship Game, where he saw the Falcons win a spot in Super Bowl LI. He also attended the 2017 game between the GA Bulldogs and the GA Tech Yellow Jackets, where he had the pleasure of sitting beside the mother of Evander Holyfield.
In his spare time, he enjoyed fishing. He also loved animals, especially dogs. He bred Yorkshire Terriers for several years.

Survivors include five daughters, Charlene Mills (George) of Gay, Tammy Denton (Mike) of Monticello, Teresa Wilden (Scott) of Senoia, Angela Combs of Gay, and Debra Combs of Franklin; one son, Tommy Combs of Hogansville; a number of grandchildren and great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; one sister, Annette Hopson (Bonnie) of LaGrange; four brothers, Jerry Combs of Franklin, Mike McClain (Wilma) of Cleveland, GA, Kenneth Combs (Suzanne) of Seattle, WA, and Larry Combs (Linda) of Texas; sister-in-law, Diane Bales of Franklin; and a number of other relatives and friends.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his loving wife, Marie Combs; one daughter, Ella Combs; two sons, Charles Combs, Jr. and Elvis Combs; three grandsons, David Garner, Noah Combs and Jesse Helton; and a great-grandchild, Timothy Garner.
