Services for Bill Chappell, 79, of Monroe, LA, will be April 27, 1998, at 10:30 A.M., at Lea Joyner Memorial United Methodist Church in Monroe. Officiating will be Rev. Dave Fortuna, Rev. Joe Solomon, and Rev. Isaac Patton. Burial will be in the Hasley Cemetery under the direction of Mulhearn Funeral Home.

Mr. Chappell was born in Glenwood, AR, on October 27, 1918, and died on April 24, 1998.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Luther A. and Mattie C. Chappell, three brothers and one sister.

His survivors are his cherished family: Linda W. Chappell, his wife of 51 years; his two daughters, Lynn Jones and husband, Tom, and Chris Cejka and husband Dan; two sons, Bill, Jr. and wife Debby, and Brent and wife Patsy; nine grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

In 1934, Mr. Chappell, his father, and brother Jim moved to Hot Springs, AR, where Jim was a halfback and Bill a student manager of the state high school football champions of 1934. He graduated in 1938 and worked different jobs until June, 1940, when he joined the U.S. Navy. The first ship he served on was the heavy cruiser, U.S.S. Louisville CA 33. In October, 1942, he transferred to the U.S.S. Orion AS 13, and his last ship during W.W.II was the U.S.S. Hunter Marshall A.P.D.112. In the Korean War, he served on the U.S.S. Sprosten DDE 597, U.S.S. Frank E. Evans DD 759, and U.S.S. John Hood DD 655. While aboard the Sprosten, he took part in Operation Greenhouse in April, 1951. Bill completed 20 years of naval service in 1961. Most of the service was as a Chief Machinist Mate E7. His final ship was the General George A. Tandall TAP 115. The medals awarded included the National Defense Service, United Nations Service, China Service, Korean Service and Korean Presidential Unit Citation. He was employed at the U.S. Post Office from November, 1961, to March, 1983. He was a past officer of the Rose Society and a lifetime member of the board of Lea Joyner Methodist Church.

Pallbearers will be Carl Parker, Rodney Irwin, J.L. Milby, Davis Baker, Steve Banks, and Bill Hamner. Honorary pallbearers are Harry Swaggart, Sam Taylor, Cleo Moore, H.W. McClanahan, Prentice Parker, and W.S. Desha.

Visitation will be at Mulhearn Funeral Home on Sterlington Road from 5:00 to 8:00 P.M.
