James was born in the Slocum community of Anderson Co, TX to Francis Boykin "Frank" and Dora Alice Crawford Scott. His parents are buried in Crawford Cemetery. He is buried beside his wife, Ila Mae Ashley, who he married 16 May 1925 in Anderson County. Their sons, Vaughn Otis Scott, and grandson, Bryan Craig Scott, are buried in Ferguson Cemetery. He was residing in Palestine, TX at the time of his death at the Veterans Administration Hospital in Temple, Bell Co, TX. He was survived by his wife; five son, James Collier Scott Jr. of Porter, Ernest Wade Scott of Taylors, SC, Paul Wayne Scott of mineral Wells, Roger Coy Scott of Honolulu, HI, and Vaughn Othis Scott of Palestine; three daughters, Carolyn Scott Stanley of Houston, Alice Scott Jeffcoat of Palestine and Sandra Jo Scott Dennis of Houston; two sisters, Mrs. G. M. Bridges of Alpine and Mrs. Laura Murdock of Elkhart; and 22 grandchildren. His obituary was published in Palestine Herald-Press, Sunday, 22 October 1972.
