Mrs. Clara Jewell Powers Davis, a resident of Lake Drive in Somerville and a longtime resident of Fayette County, died at 3:35 P.M. Thursday, April 29, 2004, at her residence. She was 77 years of age and died following an extended illness.

Funeral services were conducted at 2 P.M. Saturday, May 1st at the Peebles Funeral Chapel in Somerville with Rev. David Parlow, pastor of the Oak Grove Baptist Church in Moscow, officiating. Interment was in the Perry Cemetery near Laconia. Peebles Fayette County Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Davis was born August 21, 1926, in Chattanooga, Oklahoma, the daughter of the late Earl Hobson Powers, Sr. and the late Clara Latrice Branun Powers. She moved with her parents at an early age to West Tennessee and was educated in the public schools of Fayette County. Mrs. Davis was married November 27, 1943, to A.W. "Goat" Davis, former employee of H&C Table Company in Somerville, who preceded her in death August 17, 1990.

Mrs. Davis was a homemaker and in earlier years had been employed by the Somerville Manufacturing Company and the Farber Brothers Manufacturing Company in Somerville. She was a Baptist and was a devoted mother and grandmother to her large family. Mrs. Davis received much enjoyment from family gatherings and preparing food for family and friends with cakes and pies as her specialty. Mrs. Davis also enjoyed sewing and gardening as long as her health permitted.

Mrs. Davis is survived by two daughters, Barbara Price of Millington, Donna Richardson of Oakland; six sons, Larry Davis of Sardis, Mississippi, Jerry Davis of Oakland, Alvin Davis, Mike Davis, Billy Davis, all of Somervile, Johnny Davis of Moscow; one step-daughter, Pat Belew of Greenfield, Tennessee; five sisters, Frankie Holden of Somerville, Peggy Jo Cox of Laconia, Sadie Davis of Hickory Valley, Tennessee, Inez Voyles and Valeria Bishop, both of Somerville; three brothers, Earl Hobson Powers, Jr., Jimmy Powers and Bill Powers, all of Somerville; twenty grandchildren, twenty-two great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by an infant son and a brother Houston Oscar Powers.

Active and honorary casketbearers were Brian Davis, Bryce Davis, Chris Davis, Jason Davis, John Davis, Michael Davis, Scotty Davis, Steven Davis, T.J. Davis, Brandon McDowell, Lane McDowell, Bradley Davis, Dorian Davis, Devin Garrison, Maximus Hardy, Chase Hubbard, Cody Hubbard, Dalton Hubbard, Cody McDowell, Ryan McDowell and Hunter Pulliam.
