ANCHOR – Sherilyn Beecher Ashley Bathgate, 77, of Anchor passed away on Saturday (Jan. 6, 2018) at Northbrook Manor Care, Cedar Rapids, Iowa.

Visitation will be from 4 to 6 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 10, at Lamb Funeral Home, Gibson City. Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Thursday, Jan. 11, at St. John's Lutheran Church with burial immediately following at St. John's Cemetery followed by a luncheon at the church.

Sherilyn Beecher Ashley Bathgate was born Nov. 23, 1940, the daughter of Clyde Jason Ashley and Anna Rosalina Beecher Ashley. She attended Melvin-Sibley Grade School and graduated from Melvin-Sibley High School in 1958. She was confirmed at St. John's Lutheran Church, Anchor, in 1953 and was very active in the Luther League both locally and nationally. She went on to study at Wartburg College from 1958 to 1960, where she met her husband Donald.

Sherilyn married Donald Bathgate of Toluca on Aug. 14, 1960, at St. John's Lutheran Church. After their wedding, they moved to Newhall, Calif., where she worked as a nurse's aide and later as a lab technician. In 1975, they moved to Agoura Hills, Calif., and she worked as a lab technician at Westlake Village Hospital in Westlake Village, Calif.

Survivors include her husband, Donald; children, Cindy (Gary Omar) Bathgate, Kevin (Tami) Bathgate and Carla (Karl) Kinch; and grandchildren, Austin, Colton and Jordan. She is also survived by her sisters-in-law, Sharon (Eugene) Nenne and Margaret Ann (Donald) Stutzman, as well as many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, Clyde and Rose Beecher Ashley; brothers, Norman Ashley and Wesley Ashley; and her nephew, Eric Ashley.

Sherilyn loved her family dearly and cherished her grandchildren. She loved spending summer days on the beach with her children in California, playing the piano and gazing at the stars on a clear summer night on her farm in Illinois. She had many talents and was well-known for her cooking, especially her pies and peanut brittle, her beautiful stained glass work and her neverending work on the family histories. She and her husband retired in 1993 and moved back to Illinois to the family farm in rural Anchor. During her "retirement," she served on the St. John's Lutheran Church council as treasurer and later as president. She was very involved in documenting the church history.

In September 2015, she and Donald moved to Robins, Iowa, to be closer to family. The family would like to thank the staff at Emery Place Assisted Living, Unity Point Hospice and Northbrook Manor Care Center for their dedicated care.

Memorials may be directed to St. John's Lutheran Church, Anchor; Unity Point Hospice, Cedar Rapids; or the Alzheimer's Association.
