MILDRED ALLIEN HOKANSON Mildred Allien Hokanson, age 94, died on the morning of January 6, 2018 at her home in Desert Aire, WA. Supported by great neighbors, friends and family, she was able to remain in her home until her time of death. Over the years she touched the lives of a huge and wide array of people. She was extremely intelligent, a voracious reader, crossword puzzle worker extraordinaire, avid quilter, a living history book and maintained her sharp mind until the end. Born on the Standing Rock Indian Reservation at Fort Yates, ND on April 27, 1923 to father Goodwin Hokanson and mother Delia (Bickford) Hokanson. The great depression made for tough times and Mildred ofen said that their milk producing cow and President Franklin D. Roosevelt saved their lives from starvation. The family later moved to New Castle, WY in 1953. Mildred graduated Fort Yates Standing Rock High School in 1941, then obtained her teaching certificate from a Teacher's college. She taught for one year in a one room school house before deciding that teaching wasn't for her. She then started with Pacific Telephone at Wenatchee in 1943 with various assignments in Pasco, Spokane, Ephrata and eventually in the San Fancisco bay area, retiring in 1976. Upon her retirement, Mildred purchased a lot at Desert Aire, WA,, built her dream home with a beautiful rose garden and made many happy memories there until her death. Mildred never married or had children but has long been considered the matriarch of the Hokanson family offering her home and advice to anyone and everyone. Mildred was preceded in death by her parents, eleven siblings and many friends. She is survived by sister Marlene Brumbles of Concord, NC, numerous nieces, nephews, their extended families and friends galore. Her last wishes writen to her nephew Duane were: "You can take my cremains to the top of your mountain and then I can look out over the Wenatchee valley and the Columbia. Be sure and take a bottle of wine". A gathering of family and friends will be announced at a later date. Donations may be made to the Franklin County Historical Society of Pasco, WA or the Union Gospel Mission.
