Duane's Life Story and Legacy

Duane L. Goss, a long time resident of Bangor was taken to his new residence with his Lord and Savior on Saturday, December 30, 2017.

Duane was born on May 18, 1931 to Boyd and Hazel (Havener) Goss in Bangor Township and moved to Mishawaka, IN where he graduated high school and took classes at Indiana University.

He then married Thelma (Miller) Goss on May 26, 1951 and moved to Bangor where he lived his entire adult life.

Duane was an electrician and owned Goss Electric in Bangor for many years before taking a job with The Michigan State Police as a Fire Safety Executive. Duane was active in the Bangor community serving as the Bangor Building and Electrical Inspector, City Manager, member of the school board, City Planning Commission, Downtown Development Authority, Economic Development Corporation, County Planning Commission, and the Bangor Fire Department for 35 years, 12 of those as Chief. He was also an adjunct instructor for the University of Michigan, Southwestern Michigan College, and The National Fire Academy, and served as the construction coordinator for the Michigan Department of Natural Resources developing the Kal-Haven Trail.

Duane loved camping, traveling to all fifty states, all provinces of Canada, and 14 foreign countries. He also loved sports; officiating high school and college basketball for many years. He was a member of the Bangor Free Methodist Church where he served in many capacities for over 60 years.

He is survived by his wife of 66 years, Thelma, two daughters, Linda (Steve) Schiele of Schoolcraft, Debbie (Jack) Miller of Cadillac, two sons, David (Sally) Goss of Bangor, and Brian (Marie) Goss of Nolensville, TN, nine grandchildren, four step grandchildren, and several great-grandchildren, one brother, Garold (Diane) Goss of Bristol, IN, and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents and two brothers, Ernest Melvin Goss and Elmer Goss.

Services will be held at the Bangor Free Methodist Church on Wednesday, January 3 at 11:00 a.m.

Visitation will take place at Bangor Chapel, D. L. Miller Funeral Home on Tuesday, January 2 from 6-8 p.m. and at the Bangor Free Methodist Church on Wednesday, January 3 at 10-11 a.m.

Memorials can be made to the Bangor Free Methodist Church or to Hospice Care of Southwest Michigan at www.hospiceswmi.org.
