John was the son of Gideon Crawford and Freelove Fenner of Providence, Rhode Island. His father had emigrated from Lanark, Scotland, arriving in Providence in 1670. John married on 20 December 1715 Amey Whipple, the daughter of Colonel Joseph Whipple and Alice Smith.
John held the title of Captain when he died, and his widow Amey was given administration of his estate a month after his death. Children:
