Henry Reed was born in Sangamon County, Ills., May 4, 1828. He was married to Hannah Lucus Dec. 21, 1848, who died Dec. 2nd, 1870.
To this union there were born seven children: Thomas Reed, Marshalltown, Iowa; Frank Reed, Earlsboro, Okla.; Mary Kline, Chambers, Neb.; Mattie Smith, Conrad; Russell Reed, Forbes, N.D.; Sadie Ogden, Storm Lake, Ia.; and Isom Reed, who died at Chambers, Neb. Dec. 3rd, 1901. There were nine brothers and sisters of whom only two are living namely: Mrs. A.K. Lucus, Omaha, Neb. and Mrs. Wm. Stewart, Wellington, Ills.
Mr. Reed and his family came to Iowa in covered wagons in the fall of 1865 and settled on the land known of late years as the Shaw farm, and which is now the part of Conrad north of Center street. He has been a hard worker all his life, and for a great many years has suffered with rheumatism. Last year he was taken sick in October, at the home of his daughter Mrs. Ogden of Storm Lake, and was ill all winter, since then he has been gradually failing until his death which occurred at the home of his daughter, Mrs. J.F. Smith at about 8 o'clock on the evening of March 11, 1908.
Funeral services were held at home on March 13, at 10 o'clock a.m., conducted by Rev. T. N. Buchannan, pastor of the Presbyterian church. Messers E. L. Guild and Alba Barnes, Mesdames St. John and Lounsberry sang a number of beautiful hymns. The burial was at Vienna cemetery.
