Delois Mergel "Sandy" Akes, 91, of Casa Grande, Ariz., died Aug. 30 in Casa Grande.

Sandy was born June 2, 1923, in Haynes, N.D., to Bryan and Kathryn Akes. Later, his mother owned a cafe‚ in Centerville, Iowa, where he worked before and after school. He was captain of the football team and loved playing basketball into adulthood. He was also a very good carpenter, making furniture in shop class. He met the love of his life, Dorothe Marie Tock, in high school.

He served in the Signal Corps of the U.S. Army and strung lines all over Europe. After the war, he married Dorothe in the Methodist Church in Centerville.

They moved west to Cheyenne, where he took a job as a lineman for Cheyenne Light, Fuel and Power. He worked for them for more than 40 years. He and Dorothe had two children, Sandra Dee and Richard Tock. They built their home out of lumber and brick they tore down from barracks at F.E. Warren Air Force Base. They belonged to First United Methodist Church in Cheyenne and attended First Presbyterian Church in Casa Grande.

Sandy loved to play golf, basketball and bowl. He worked hard, and enjoyed working on his home and playing sports. He and Dorothe traveled to many places after his retirement: Honduras, Hawaii and all over Europe to the places he was during the war. They even sailed a ship in the Caribbean with Dorothe's sister, Nancy, Syd and Sandra. They took a trip every summer with their granddaughters in tow.

They purchased property in Yuma, Ariz., and built a vacation home. They traveled between Yuma and Cheyenne for many years. They later moved to Casa Grande, in the area their son and daughter-in-law live. After living in the cold of Wyoming, they really enjoyed the heat in Arizona.

Sandy is survived by his wife of 69 years, Dorothe Marie Akes; son, Richard (Belinda) Akes of Eloy, Ariz.; granddaughters, Jennifer (Michael) McClintic of Casa Grande, Rhianna (Matt) Stainbrook of Rapid City, S.D., Deanna (Erik) Plank of Las Vegas, Cara (Chris) Johnson of Jasper, Ala., and Andree (Robert) Anderson of Greeley, Colo.; great-grandchildren, Ethan and Adyson McClintic, Brady and Eva Stainbrook, Kathryn Plank, Tavia and Brylie (Coach) Johnson, and Hadley and Haylee Anderson; sisters-in-law, Nancy (Sydney) Ulvik of Germantown, Md., and Peggy (Don) Hakola of Yuma; brother-in-law, Robert (Pat) Tock of Lake Tapawingo, Mo.; nephew, Denis Nelson of Lakewood, Colo.; numerous nieces and nephews; and many friends.

Sandy was preceded in death by his daughter, Sandra Dee Akes Trautwein; son-in-law, Richard Trautwein; mother and dad, Kathryn Fleming and Bryan Akes; sisters, Lucy Akes and Sally DeNoto; and sister-in-law, Mary Jeane Tock.
