Alexander Crawford is likely related to the Crawford family in Augusta County, VA. It has still not been established who his parents were, but it is likely that he was either the grandson of Alexander and Mary McPheeters Crawford or grandson to a brother or relative of Alexander Crawford born 1715. It is likely that Alexander Crawford was born in 1767 in Augusta Co., VA. It is possible that he travelled with a relative or his parents to Fayette, KY (? Uncle or Father Rev. James Crawford) and then moved to Lincoln Co., KY by the age of 20 where he married Margaret McElwee on January 21, 1788. Perhaps Rev. James Crawford was married previously and Alexander Crawford b. 1767 was his son. Alexander and Margaret Crawford had at least 11 children; 7 males and 4 daughters: Adams, Andrew Joseph, Thomas, Sarah, Martha, John A., Harrison B., Alexander Shelby Crawford, Nancy, one unknown son born abt. 1800 and one unknown daughter born abt. 1805. Half of their children were born in Lincoln Co., KY before it become Somerset, Pulaski Co., in 1801.

*New research now indicates that there is relationship between the Logan Family that emigrated from the region of Halifax, VA to Augusta, VA. Alexander Crawford's wife Margaret McElwee had a brother named William McElwee who married a sister of Sarah McClure (Agnes) who was first married to John Logan. When Sarah McClure died, John Logan married Rachel McPheeters. We know that the McPheeter family was initimately connected through marriages into the Crawford family of Augusta, VA. We know also that the Patriarch of the Logan family; David Logan - was first married to Martha Danielle Dudgeon, a sister to Rebecka Dudgeon who married James Terry. James Terry's granddaughter Mary Polly Terry married Henry Mullins. The Mullins family was closely connected to the Crawford family, as was the Adams family. Eldest son of Alexander and Margaret McElwee Crawford - Adam Crawford - married for a second time to Lavinia Denney, who was a daughter to Sarah Simpson Denney and Elijah Denney. Sarah Simpson was a sister to Jemimah Simpson who married Peter Smith of Hogan's Creek, Caswell, North Carolina. Peter Smith lived near James Terry and Rebecka Dudgeon Terry. So, there was definitely a family Mullins, Dudgeon, Terry, Crawford connection. Also, this is speculative, but there may also be some connection between the Crawford's of Augusta, VA and the Crawford family of Hanover, VA. We do know that James Terry (b. abt 1702) had a brother named Joseph Terry who married Judith Crawford. Perhaps David Crawford Jr. and Sr. (father and grandfather to Judith Crawford) are somehow connected to Alexander Crawford of Augusta, VA. Perhaps both Crawford families came from the same area of Scotland or Ireland and knew each other. Incidentally, the McClure family also came from Donegal, Ireland as did the Logans, Caldwell's, and Dudgeon families.
