Virginia Beach - James A. Grayer, Sr., 73, of the 4900 block of Denny Dr. passed away on December 22, 2017 at Sentara Leigh Hospital in Norfolk, VA. He was born to the late Ada Heard Grayer and the late Joe Grayer on May 6, 1944. He is also predeceased by two sisters, Roberta Grayer and Sallie D. Grayer and six brothers, C.G. Grayer, John Grayer, Roland Grayer, Joe R. Grayer, Sr., Willie Grayer and Leon Grayer. He retired in 1994 after 27 years of service from the U.S. Navy where he received the Navy Purple Heart, National Defense Medal and Vietnam Service Medal. James is survived by his wife, Emily Grayer; four sons, Raulstan, Derek, James Jr. and Vitas; four sisters, Iola Nelson, Annie Francis Whiting, Mary A. Clark and Linda Jones; eight grandchildren, Jalen Grayer, Stoney Grayer, Christian Hernandez, Wesley Grayer, Ashley Grayer, Mason Grayer, Donovan Taylor and Traydon Grayer.

A funeral service will be held, 11am, Thursday, January 4, 2018 at Mt. Bethel Baptist Church, 4636 Indian River Rd. Virginia Beach, VA 23456. A viewing will be held, 2pm-8pm, Wednesday, January 3, 2018 at Metropolitan Funeral Service, Granby St. Norfolk, VA. Interment will be held at Albert G. Horton Veteran Cemetery, Suffolk, VA.
