Centralia Journal, Friday, March 26, 1886, page 1:
Found Dead in Bed

Last Sunday night H.R. Sears, who has been living with Geo. Webster on the Haulsey wheat farm seven miles southwest of this place, went to bed apparently as well as usual. When he was called to breakfast the next morning, there was no response, and the rest of the family sat down and ate, thinking perhaps that he might not be feeling very well. After they had eaten their breakfast they rapped on his door and tried to rout him again, but as the door was locked on the inside and failing to hear any noise or response they concluded that he must be very sick or something the matter. They sent for Dr. Best and when he and some others arrived, the man's door was broken in and he was found to be dead. His body was quite cold and he must have been dead some time before his fate was discovered.

The coroner was sent for but as he was sick and unable to attend the duty involved upon our Justice of the Peace, Henry Lohmuller, who summoned a jury of six, consisting of W.B. Carter, B.B. Bunn, Peter Goom, W.H. Thornton, J.M. Bunn and W. Carpenter. After a brief examination the jury decided that the corpse came to his death by some unknown cause, but not feloniously. It is supposed by some that he committed suicide but outwardly he showed no signs of it, as there were no marks or anything to show that this was the cause and the bed clothes were not even disarranged, and everything went to show that he died easy.

He was buried in the cemetery here Wednesday, Rev. Bush officiating at the funeral. Mr. Haulsey and other relatives of Atchison came down and attended the funeral ceremony. He was 67 years of age.
