Merritt earned his bachelor's degree from Oberlin College. He then attended Trall' s school to earn a medical degree during the winter term of 1867-as small break from his missionary work in California. In 1877-1878 he built and then directed the Rural Health Retreat in the Napa Valley (now St. Helena Hospital). Starting in 1893, he spent a decade working on missionary and health reform work in the South Pacific Islands and Australia, where he established the Seventh-day Adventist Sanitariums in Sydney and Tonga.

Merritt was a missionary, pastor & doctor.

First marriage was to Louisa Rawson (1834-1894). They had a son-Charles Merritt (1856-1889)

Second wife was Eleanor Kathleen Nolan-they married July 29, 1895 in Australia. She was born 1874 in Rosewater, Australia.

They had two children:
Harold 1899 born Tonga
Muriel 1906 born CA-died 2003 CA

After Merritt died, Eleanor married Claude Basford. He died in 1940 & Eleanor died March 25, 1949 in Los Angeles, CA
