Dr. Hassoon Shaker Al-Amiri, 90, passed away on Oct. 14, 2017, surrounded by his loving family.
He was born in Diwaniyah, Iraq, and came to the U.S. in 1954 to pursue his doctorate degree in mathematics at the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor. Upon graduation, he taught at the University of Rhode Island for one year before returning to Iraq in 1962 to teach at Baghdad University. He obtained a professor position in 1964 at Bowling Green State University, where he taught for 30 years and served as department chairman.
He had a wonderful sense of humor, was an excellent cook and master storyteller. He often roared with laughter when telling a joke, and delighted in the simple pleasures of life. He was endlessly patient, loved animals, children, and spending time outdoors. Ever the optimist, he never complained and relied on his faith in good times and in bad. He fought hard and was the family hero.
Nothing in life gave him more joy than his family.
He is survived by his wife, Almaza; son, Rannie; daughter, Roula; stepson, Ali; grandson, Hadi; stepgrandson, Anwar; and sister, Najat.
He was preceded in death by his first wife, Dr. Aida Tomeh.
He was buried in Iraq at his request.
He will be remembered fondly and missed tremendously by all the lives he touched around the world.
