Catherine Ann "Kate" Skaff Grochowski went to heaven on Sunday, Dec. 24, 2017, at her home.

Born March 5, 1929, in Wilkes-Barre, she was a daughter of the late Abraham and Helen Joseph Skaff.

Kate was a 1947 graduate of E.L. Meyers High School, Wilkes-Barre, and completed three years of nurse's training at Mercy Hospital.

Instead of nursing, she elected to be a full-time mom to her eight children.

Kate was a member of Our Lady of Hope Parish, Wilkes-Barre, and its confraternity of Christian Women.

She was also a lector, member of the choir, and past chairwoman of multiple committees, including the turkey dinners, pierogi making, bazaars, rummage sales, and fall festivals.

Along with her husband, she performed for the Polka Jets Dance Group on Channel 44 and in nursing homes.

They were also marriage encounter speakers for pre-cana classes and foster parents for 10 years, taking in infants until their adoption.

She took sewing at Coughlin High School in "Miss McDermott's Sewing Class," taught CCD for 17 years, and was a Boy Scout den mother for 12 years.

Kate and Larry were married Feb. 3, 1951. After 56 years of marriage, Kate lost her best friend and the "Best Husband in the World," Larry Grochowski, on May 4, 2007. He treated her like a queen and she really missed him.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Larry; grandson, Cody Christopher Mrozowski; great-granddaughter, Ava Vasquez-Kwarcinski; son-in-law, Michael Kingston; sister, Zequa Joseph, Mishtayeh, Syria; brothers, Jake "Ziggy" Skaff, Thomas Skaff, Isaac Skaff, and Fred Skaff.

Surviving are her sons, Larry (Wanda) Grochowski, Wilkes-Barre; Michael (Diane) Grochowski, Ice Lake, Mountain Top; daughters, Ann Marie Kingston, Wilkes-Barre; Mary Jean (Edward) Kwarcinski, Wilkes-Barre; Cathy (Jack) Stevens of Brandon, Fla.; Christine (Leroy) Mrozowski, Wilkes-Barre Twp.; Helen (Joseph) Toscano, Lyons, Colo.; Tressa Joseph and her husband, Andrew Durante, Blue Bell; grandchildren, Eric Trotsko, Amber, Jude, and Jesse Kingston; Maria, Michael, Katie, Edward, and Kenneth Kwarcinski; Tracy Stevens; Joshlyn Wolfram; Crysi Calta; Leroy Frank and Jesse James Mrozowski; Melissa Merriman; Larry Grochowski; Rachel Coffee; Angela Grochowski; Sacha Marino; Marin Toscano; Leila Stiefel; Michael and Devon Grochowski; Dominic Joseph; Joseph, Jillian, and Meghan Casey; 27 great grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held at 9 a.m. Friday from Jendrzejewski Funeral Home, 21 N. Meade St., Wilkes-Barre, with a Mass of Christian Burial at 9:30 a.m. in Our Lady of Hope Parish, Park Avenue, Wilkes-Barre. The Rev. John S. Terry, pastor, will be celebrant. Interment will follow in St. Mary's Maternity Cemetery, West Wyoming.
