John is a son of William Acton (1800-1859) and Sarah Ashworth (1799-1850). Born and raised in England, he immigrated to Utah. There he married Anna Marie Jensen on August 29, 1870 in Salt Lake City. They became parents to two children: Sarah Alice and John.
