Lawrence Duane Flock of Bancroft, NE, 85, passed away Sunday, December 17, 2017 at St. Francis Memorial Hospital in West Point, NE. Funeral services will be Thursday, December 21, 2017 at 10:30 a.m. at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Bancroft; Pastor Nathan Henschen will be officiating. The visitation will be Wednesday, December 20, 2017 from 5:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. at Munderloh-Smith Funeral Home in Bancroft, NE. The burial will be in the Bancroft Cemetery. Memorials may be directed to the family for future designation. Arrangements are under the direction of Munderloh-Smith Funeral Home in Bancroft, NE.
Duane was born March 29, 1932 to Jesse and Grace (Mullen) Flock in Sparland, IL. He was baptized at Plymouth Congregational Church in Chillicothe, IL and attended grade school there. In 1947, Duane and his family moved to Bancroft where he attended high school and graduated in 1950. After graduation, Duane helped his father at B.A.C. Garage. On January 28, 1953, he was called to serve his country in the Fifth Army during the Korean War. Due to his father’s poor health, he was called home to run the family business. He was discharged from the service May 21, 1954.
Duane was confirmed into the Lutheran faith June 10, 1956. He married Jeanette Petz on June 17, 1956 at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in West Point, NE by Rev. Frederick Niedner; to this union, five children were born, Nolan, Colette, Melanie, Renee, and Tim. For 40 years, Duane had a wrecker service and repaired and sold used cars. In 1997 he suffered a ruptured cerebral aneurysm which forced him to retire. He was an active community leader. He served on the St. Francis Hospital Foundation Board, Village Board, School Board and was a long time Bancroft fireman. He helped organize the first Rescue Squad in Bancroft. In 1998, Duane and Jeanette received the “Good Neighbor Award.” He also received his 50 year pin from the American Legion Post 191. His love for his church prompted him to serve in many areas including President, Elder, Sunday school, usher, and choir member. For 19 years he was known as the “Voice of the Panthers,” announcing all home football games. A special memory of Duane’s was announcing the only indoor football game that Bancroft played at the Dakota Dome in Vermillion, SD. His lifetime dream came true when the Chicago Cubs won the 2016 World Series. Duane most enjoyed attending his children and grandchildren’s school activities.
He is survived by his wife, Jeanette Flock; daughters, Melanie (Jeff) Lingle, Renee (Keith) Buchholz; son, Tim (JoDee) Flock; son-in-law, Mark Schilling; sisters-in-law, Shirley Flock, Wanda Larsen; brother-in-law, Larry (Maxine) Petz; grandchildren, Tiffany (Tony) Rayback, Jessica (Shane) Tillery, Amber Gibbs, Joshua Buchholz, Tyson Schilling, Kyle Buchholz, Jalen Flock, Hannah Flock; great grandchildren, Payje, Kyleigh, Cassandra, Matelyn, and Brinx Rayback, Caeden and Adysen Zimmerman, and Kadence and Wyatt Tillery; and many nieces and nephews.
