Joan (pronounced Joanne) was the oldest child of her parents, Lawrence & Blanche (Kilham) Coulter. She graduated from Brunswick (Maryland) High School in 1950 and later that year, on Nov. 24, 1950, she married Henry Best. They had one daughter, Lori.

Joan was a housewife at her home in Knoxville. She volunteered for 26 years at Pleasant Valley Elementary School in Knoxville. She was an active member of the nearby Brownsville Church of the Brethren, as were many of her family. At various times she was a Sunday School teacher, a Bible School teacher and a Sunday School secretary there.

Joan is survived by her daughter Lori, a grandson, sister Sharon and step-brother Michael Bowers. She was predeceased by her parents, step-mother Jackie (Penner), husband Henry, brother Franklin, infant sisters Gloria and Ann, half-sister Susan, and step-brother Patrick Bowers.

Joan was the niece of my great-grandmother Gladys ("Gang"). When I was a kid in Maryland we would take Gang on visits to "the country" every so often, to go back and see where she was from and visit some of her nieces and nephews there. Joan's house was always one of our stops. The last time I saw Joan I remember her talking very excitedly about her grandson and showing me a bunch of pictures of him. She was a nice lady.
