Born in Virginia. Appointed from Mississippi. Resigned as lieutenant, US Navy, January 22, 1861. First lieutenant April 5, 1861. First lieutenant, October 23, 1862, to rank from October 2, 1862. First Lieutenant Provisional Navy, June 2, 1864, to rank from January 6, 1864.
Special duty, New Orleans, 1861. CSS McRae, New Orleans station, 1861. CSS Virginia (Merrimack), until her destruction, May 11, 1862; participated in the Battle of Hampton Roads, Va., March 8-9, 1862. Drewrys Bluff, Va., 1862. First lieutenant, Mobile Squadron, 1862-1864. Mobile station 1864-65. Paroled May 14, 1865, Jackson, Miss.
