Indianapolis - Arlene Gloria Hancock, 90, of Indianapolis, passed away on December 12, 2017. During her short illness, she found great comfort from her faith & her children.
Arlene was married in 1946 to Richard Hancock (deceased in 2005). Together they raised five children in Verona, NJ, Richard Jr (Denise), Sue Waymire (Bill), Daniel, David (Deb) and Louise Altum (Jim). Arlene had a way of making each of her children feel uniquely special.
Arlene grew up in Orchard Park, NY and attended Canisius College. She received her Bachelor's degree in Elementary Education at Wm Paterson University in New Jersey and became a Reading Specialist by earning a Master's degree at Butler University.
After the family relocated to Indianapolis, she taught elementary education for many years in the Metropolitan School District of Lawrence Township.
Arlene was an avid lover of art & for many years, was a docent at the Indianapolis Museum of Art. Gardening also filled many hours of her time. Fulfilling their lifelong dreams, Arlene and Dick also traveled extensively after their retirements.
Arlene was blessed with and dearly loved her grandchildren, Cindy Hancock, Justin Altum, Jessica McCrea, Julie Turner, Matthew Altum and Brian Hancock. Adding to her joy were five great-grandchildren.
Arlene also has two sisters, Diana Dickson and Anita McGrath , and three brothers, Fred Webber (deceased), Don Webber and Thomas Webber.
Later in life, Arlene lived at Hooverwood Indianapolis Jewish Home. The staff at Hooverwood took exceptional care of Arlene each and every day until her death. Arlene's family can not adequately express their gratitude to the entire staff at Hooverwood. In honor and in light of the family's fondness of this loving staff, donations in Arlene's name can be made to Hooverwood's Employee Holiday Fund @ 7001 Hoover Road, Indpls, 46260.
Graveside services will be held at Our Lady of Peace Cemetery on December 15 at 11 am.
