Rev. LaPrade Starke Jones, Jr., 98, of Fredericksburg passed away Monday, December 11, 2017 surrounded by loved ones.
Starke was born March 5, 1919 at Granite Springs, VA to LaPrade Starke Jones Sr. and Betsy Biscoe Jones. He was preceded in death by his parents and a sister Doris Jones Mosher.

Starke was the surviving classmate of the Class of 1937 who graduated from Fredericksburg High School, now James Monroe High School. He attended the University of Richmond on an athletic scholarship. He graduated from Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary in Fort Worth, TX.

His career began while in college. He played during the summer minor league baseball for a team in Sanford, North Carolina. After college, he worked as an accountant for F. H. McGraw Construction Company. He was sent to Bermuda where the company built an air strip for the U. S. Navy. Upon completion of that job he was sent to Provo, Utah where they were building the largest steel mill west of the Mississippi River. While in Utah he was called into the U. S. Navy. He attended schools in Bainbridge, Md., Sampson, NY and Jacksonville Fla. He was sent to Pearl Harbor, Hawaii and remained there throughout the duration of World War II.

In 1941 he married Madelyn LeCouteur Jones. They had 76 happy years together.

Survivors include his wife, Madelyn; son LaPrade Starke Jones III of Albuquerque, New Mexico; daughter Linda Sue Jones Hemp of Staunton; three granddaughters Heather Getzloff of Boise, Idaho, Karyn DeParis of Brasilia, Brazil and Sandy Jones of Richmond; three great-grandsons Liam Getzloff, Alec Getzloff and Chaivis Jones; and one great-granddaughter Addison Anderson.

Starke felt the call in 1962 to full time Christian ministry. After graduating from seminary he served as Minister of Education at Hillcrest Baptist Church in Hillcrest Heights, Md. In 1966 he was called to the Virginia Baptist Home for aged in Culpeper as assistant administrator. After retirement he was called to Woodville Baptist Church in Woodville where he was pastor for many years. During his ministry at Culpeper and Woodville he and his wife were active in Shiloh Baptist Association. He also served as associate pastor of Fredericksburg Baptist Church for three years.

Starke accepted Christ as his Lord and Savior at the age of 12 at Fredericksburg Baptist Church
where he was a current member and a member of Baraca Bible Class.

The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday, December 13 at Covenant Funeral Service, Fredericksburg.

A service will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, December 14 at Fredericksburg Baptist Church. Interment will follow at Oak Hill Cemetery.
