Robert A. Abernathy, 80, of Williamstown, died at 8:30 a.m. Monday at his home. From 1936 to 1952, he served as mechanic and parts manager for Grant County Motors. He was the owner and operator of Bob's Gulf Service, Williamstown, from 1952 until his retirement in 1977. He was a former partner in the Juett and Abernathy Trucking Co. He was a member of the Williamstown Christian Church and the building committee there, and was a deacon for 25 years. In the 1950s, he was a Williamstown city councilman. He was a former member of the Williamstown Planning and Zoning Commission and a 45-year member of Grant Masonic Lodge No. 85. In 1983, he was the grand marshal of the Marigold Festival in Williamstown. Survivors include his wife of 58 years, Frances Marksberry Abernathy; a daughter, Linda Goodman of Cincinnati; a sister, Nancy Mary Bennett of Florence; and two grandchildren.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Thursday at Elliston-Stanley Funeral Home, Williamstown. Visitation will be there from 4 to 9 p.m. Wednesday, with Masonic services at 7:30 p.m. Entombment will be in the Williamstown Cemetery Mausoleum. Memorials are suggested to the church building fund.
