Earle James Balgeman passed away on Saturday, November 7, 2015, in Arroyo Grande, California. He was 88 years old. Earle was born on the Balgeman farm in West Bend, Iowa, to George and Minnie Balgeman. Earle was baptized in the West Bend Lutheran Church as a baby and confirmed on June 22, 1941. He enjoyed playing baseball and riding his horse. Not only was Earle talented athletically, but also musically. He could play piano and clarinet. Earle graduated from West Bend High School in 1945 as president of his class. He joined the Navy and reported for boot camp a few days after he turned 18. Earle moved to Glendale, California, to attend Cal-Aero Technical Institute on the GI Bill. He worked for Lockheed as an Aeronautical Engineer for more than 39 years.

Earle met and married Anne Powell in Sunnyvale, Calif. They raised four children: Mark, Frank, Brian, and Kathleen. Their family joined the Lutheran Church of Our Savior in Cupertino, California, where Earle and the family participated in many church activities. In 1966, they moved to Fremont and became active in the Lutheran church there. He especially enjoyed playing on the church softball team. In 1972, they moved to the Santa Cruz Mountains and rejoined the Lutheran Church of Our Savior in Cupertino. Earle retired in 1992 and spent his remaining years in the Pismo Beach/Arroyo Grande area. When they were not traveling they dedicated themselves to serving the members of their local community. Earle spent many hours as a volunteer tractor driver for the Mental Health Transition Farm in San Luis Obispo and as a volunteer for the Computers4Kids program at Exploration Station in Grover Beach. During his retirement Earle continued to play softball for Pismo Beach Senior Softball and pitched until he was 76 years old! In addition, Earle loved to spend time with his five grandchildren and watch their many sporting events and activities. He and Anne were members of Star of Bethlehem in Santa Maria for sixteen years. Earle's final church home was Peace Lutheran in Arroyo Grande where he and Anne have been members for four years.

Earle is survived by his wife, Anne; his sons, Mark and Frank, Frank's wife Valerie and their son Chandler; his daughter, Kathleen and her husband Brian Kahovec and their four children: Brian, Toccoa, Curtis, and Timmy. He is also survived by his sister Donna Bargman, brother-in-law Bob Bargman and brother-in-law Vic Meyer along with many relatives of both his parents' nine brothers and sisters and many nieces and nephews. Earle was preceded in death by his parents, his sisters Jo Ann and Janet, and his youngest son, Brian. A Memorial Service will be held for Earle on Saturday, November 21 at 11:00am at Peace Lutheran Church, 244 North Oak Park Blvd., Arroyo Grande, Calif., 93420.
