Longtime Butte resident Leo Milburn died Saturday.

He was born June 6, 1913, in Grand Forks, Minn., to Joseph Francis and Gina (Kopervig) Milburn. He started his education in Minnesota schools before coming to Butte and attending the Grant and Washington junior high schools. He left school following the eighth grade to help support his family. Leo went to work at Hansen's Packing at the age of 14. He later worked at Biastoch before becoming an electrician for the Anaconda Co.

It was at Hansen's Packing that he met Elizabeth “Bessie” Allen. They married on May 22, 1938. After 25 years with Hansen's Leo went to work at Biastoch Meats. He worked there until 1958, when he and Bessie took over Flynn's Market at 308 W. Aluminum St. They re-named it Milburn's Grocery. After 12 years in the grocery business, Leo began his final career as an electrician for the Anaconda Co., from which he retired in 1973.

He belonged to St. John the Evangelist Parish and the Arco Retirees Club. He enjoyed woodworking, which was a hobby he called stress relief, and playing his harmonica. Leo often stated that he enjoyed maintaining his and his wife's home, which would keep anyone busy.

His parents, wife Bessie (Aug. 8, 1988), brothers Tom, Bill and Bob, and sisters Bernice Kraft, Ethel Hauck and Lucile Dean preceded Leo in death.

Survivors include three daughters, three sons-in-law, 16 grandchildren, 41 great-grandchildren, one great-great-granddaughter, four sisters-in-law, nieces and nephews [survivor's names omitted].

Relatives and friends may call for visitation from 9 to 10 a.m. Tuesday in St. John the Evangelist Church where Liturgy of the Resurrection will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Interment will be in Holy Cross Cemetery. Memorials: St. John the Evangelist Church.--Montana Standard, July 8, 2002
