Robert Carter Cherry, 83, died peacefully at his home in Memphis, TN, on March 31, 2011. He was born in Dallas, TX, on September 25, 1927. He is survived by his wife of fifty-nine years, Jane Carlisle Cherry, three children, Carolyn Cherry Richards, Daniel Carlisle Cherry (Susan), and Kristen Cherry McTyre (James) and 6 grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, Robert Johnson Cherry and Ada Carter Cherry, and a sister, Vivian Cherry Payne. Mr. Cherry was a graduate of the United States Naval Academy and a veteran of the United States Marine Corps. He served in both World War II and Korea. Mr. Cherry began his career as a mechanical engineer and advanced to the status of professional engineer. He lived in Houston and Kansas City before settling in Memphis where he was Vice-President of Engineering at Layne & Bowler. Mr. Cherry retired in 1989. During his retirement years he served as a volunteer Spanish language interpreter in the medical community. He continued to enjoy his hobbies of hiking, camping, hunting and fishing throughout his retirement years. An outdoor memorial service is planned for a later date.
