Hazel was born to Louis and Minnie (Bjerning) Ryan in rural Elkhorn, Wisconsin. She graduated from Lake Geneva High School, and then married Russell B. Oftedahl. They were the parents of six children: Dorothy Christine, Donald Russell, Alice Patricia, Linda Ruth, David Allen, and Dean Stanley.
For many years she was a member of a Canasta Club in Sharon, Wisconsin, and the Rebekah Lodge in Lake Geneva. Later she belonged to other Rebekah lodges.
Russell died in 1961, and Hazel was faced with raising four young children, having not seriously worked previously. She did the impossible, and was a great mother.
