John W. Bryant was one of the seven original settlers of Hendricks County. On the State Road 267 between Plainfield and the county line, there is a large stone which marks the site of the first settlement. A photograph is included in this memorial and the inscription from that monument is included below. He came to Hendricks County, Indiana, in 1819 and settled among the Indians. Before he died, he had cleared 7 farms (see History of Hendricks Co. Indiana). He was a soldier in the war of 1812 and was in the battle of New Orleans. Three of his sons were in the Civil War. He had 14 children.

Settlement marker on Indiana State Road 267, south of Plainfield, north of Mooresville:
On White Lick Creek in this vicinity the first settlement in Hendricks County was made in 1820 by Bartholomew Ramsey, Samuel Harriman, Harris Bray, John W. Bryant, James Dunn, George Dunn and Ezekiel Moore.
